how best to vacuum

Vacuuming regularly with a good vacuum cleaner is important to minimize dust and keep house clean. Vacuuming regularly also reduces wear and tear on carpets, floors and upholstery. Whether using canister vacuums or upright vacuums, there are a few steps to follow in order to vacuum efficiently with peak results.
Before vacuuming, it is advisable to pick up larger debris or small, hard objects. This is to prevent damage to the hose and filter through blockage. These hard items might even damage the motor, which then requires expensive repair.
Start with the ceiling, followed by the walls, windows, doors, blinds, drapes, lamps, radiators, bookshelves, upholstery, furniture surfaces, floors and lastly, the carpets.
For easier maneuverability of the machine, it might be better to take smaller movable items such as chairs, waste paper baskets for example, out of the room.
Carpets are best vacuumed at least once a week. High-traffic areas are preferably vacuum daily using a lightweight canister vacuum.
Upright vacuums with their beater brush or canister vacuums with turbo brushes or power nozzles, give the best results on carpets and rugs. The brush agitates the carpet fibers, loosening the dirt for sucking up by the strong suction. The nozzle needs to be adjusted depending on the thickness of the carpet's pile so that it is in close contact with the pile. Too low makes pushing the vacuum difficult whereas too high results in air entering above the carpet and dirt embedded deep in the carpet would not be loosened and sucked up properly.
For maximum results, it is best to move vacuum slowly over the carpet in a few passes over each area in overlapping parallel moves. Areas in front of sofas and chairs normally tends to be dirtier and needs more thorough vacuuming.
Beater brush is not suitable for bare floors as scratches may result due to the aggressive action of the brushes. It is better to use a floor brush. Bare floor brush is also ideal for low pile carpets or braided rugs as it is more gentle, compared to the harsh, spinning brushes of the power nozzle.
Delicate soft furnishings, curtains and stairs fare better with an upholstery tool designed specifically for such usage. It can also used on car interiors or mattresses with good results.
The dust brush used on walls and ceiling with the adjustable extension wand, clears off spiders and their webs with impressive results. Works great on bookshelves, furniture crevices or lighting fixtures too.
Edges of carpets, tight corners and hard-to-reach places are best cleaned using the crevice tool. It can also be used to clean window tracks or refrigerator grills.
It is advisable to change or empty a dust bag before it becomes too full as a full bag will reduce the suction power of the vacuum, leading to inefficient vacuuming. Bristles in nozzle do become clogged with lint, hair, threads or fibers. These need to be removed as they will affect the spinning action of the brushes. If brushes cannot spin properly, dirt cannot be thoroughly loosened and removed.
The more on-board tools the vacuum has, the more efficient the cleaning with more time and effort saved. Decide on the list of items you need to clean regularly, then only select and buy the best vacuum cleaner with the most attachments suited to your needs.
